The Norfolk And Western Class A 2-6-6-4 was one of the most modern and mechanically sophisticated of large articulated steam locomotives. They were constructed in the company's Roanoke, Virginia shops as late as 1950. During the late 1980s and early '90s, the lone survivor of 43 built, No. 1218, was returned to excursion service on the old N&W. She also ranged far afield on merger partner Southern Railway and off-line as well. On August 8, 1991, the 120-foot-long, 476 ton locomotive was on the Ohio River Bridge at Kenova, West Virginia.
